News for November
It has been a while since we have updated and we apologize. We are just finishing up our "integration period" which calls us to focus on becoming members of our community. Mainly working to understand our new neighbors and their needs while forging friendships. We are finally starting to feel like we are part of the community. When we meet people out and about most of them know who we are and although we still get stares and shouts of "umlungu" (white person in siSwati) they are not so overwhelming as they were at first.
I found myself this past week reflecting on the changes that technology has brought to what the experience of PC is. Unlike our predecessors of the 60's and 70's, most PCV's today have access to internet, electricity, cell phones, and even televisions at their sites! Not all but many (probably about 1/2) of us here in
Sometimes all of that technology can be distracting, but I guess it comes down to the same argument many have discussed in the more developed nations; are we more or less productive and effective because of e-mail, blackberries, ect.? We can all be ultimate multi-taskers, but should we be? Well, I can see both sides of the argument, but most of the time I am very happy to know that in my pocket I am only a text or phone call away from a friend.

Yes, technology makes the world a lot more complicated but also a lot smaller. So, I'm grateful that I can send you my best wishes on this uniquely American Thanksgiving holiday.
I've just had a great together with my family and enjoyed turkey and stuffing and some of my cousin's five delicious desserts. Hope you find a way to celebrate Swazi-style.
I was thinking of you both as I cheered on the Marine Corps marathon runners a couple of weeks ago. I didn't run this year, but I'm planning on a 2007 run somewhere.
All the best,
George
Hey - it's international AIDS day and I was just thinking about you guys and thought I'd check your blog. Any big events take place chez vous? Just got back from being PCMO in Macedonia - what fun, and Yes! it's amazing how different and yet how much the same PC is despite all the technology. We spent half our psychic energy missing home and planning trips to visit other PCVs, so maybe we weren't all in the moment either. And, jeez, I wouldn't have had to sit around my first three months waiting for vaccines to get the project started. And maybe technology makes things more transparent and people more accountable - whaddya youse guys tink? Happy AIDS day. Lesley.
P.S. Had dinner with Sonia and Matt, Kelly and Laurie - Sonia is fat and happy and guess who else - Karen!! No surprise there.
